As a coach, asking questions is a powerful and fundamental technique to engage and lead clients down an exploratory thought path. It’s one of my most favorite techniques because, time and again, it rewards the client with the most interesting of outcomes – new insight that will forever change their life.
Questions are magical; they can open up new possibilities, opportunities and perspectives — and, often, in just a matter of minutes. Questions can make an impact that can shift careers, move businesses in new directions, and empower individuals like they’ve never experienced before.
In this short series of articles, I’ll share with you three powerful questions, but I’ll only share one for now. Why? Because I want you to become one with the question — to play full out and be committed to just how powerful your answers can be when it comes to shifting your life from where it is now, to where you want it to be. I invite you to engage with it like it’s the last canteen of water in a sea of endless desert. You’re very thirsty; thirsty for your truth.
Time is of the essence. it’s almost the New Year and this question can position you for a powerful new future. Who wouldn’t want that?
Tara’s Powerful Question #2: What can I add to my life?
Yes, this one simple question can position you not only for a more powerful 2015, it can open up a new world of possibilities, happiness and success. And, more important, it will give you pause to consider what you’re doing with your most valuable asset — your life, your time, your lifetime!
In my prior post, we explored my Powerful Question #1: What can I let go of? And, today, we’ll explore the opposite. After all, if you’ve let go of some things, then you’ve opened up space and now you can add things in — if you wish! Sometimes, folks like to luxuriate in the spaciousness they’ve created from the “letting go process.” It’s up to you.
One of your most amazing assets is the ability to make choices. Yes, you can choose who and what you want in your life. Now that’s real power. At times, you may not think you have a choice, however, upon deeper inquiry, you always do. There’s always some choice, however seemingly small it may be, that can move you in some new direction and down another path.
As with the prior powerful question, it’s all about choice. And, it’s amazing how your life can unfold in new directions when you consciously make choices rather than allowing life to just “happen.” Today, consider what you want to add to your life in the New Year!
When you decide to add something to your life, let alone when you actually add it, you automatically change the energy, circumstances and ultimately the results that you will get. These changes can usher in amazing experiences, new relationships, and wonderful opportunities for both personal and professional growth.
When considering what to add to your life, you may wish to ask yourself these questions:
- Is it aligned with the vision I have for my life? Will it take me along the path — towards my North star or away from it?
- Is it aligned with my core values? We always know when something isn’t. That “it doesn’t feel right” feeling typically indicates there’s a values misalignment.
- Will it help me accomplish near and/or long-term goals? Accomplishments are important to our life happiness.
- Does it bring lightness or a sense of openness to my life? What you add should enhance, brighten and lighten your life.
- Do I have the bandwidth to add one more thing to my life? After all, you are human and you have only so much time, energy, money and resources at your disposal. If adding things will overwhelm you, then find other things you can let go of first. More does not always mean better. Be realistic about your choices.
