Getting Started: What are the first three steps?

In all my years of working with others, there’s one thing I know for sure: Most people don’t accomplish anything because they won’t take one simple step to get started.

They’ll spend all manner of writing about it, talking about it, musing about it, dreaming about it, but somehow the “doing” never gets done. And, that’s been true for me as well. I’ve had creative projects on the back burner for years.

I stopped thinking about them and started doing them. It feels fabulous! Last summer, I published over 1200 books on Amazon under a half dozen or more pen names. You may have even purchased one of my creations!

So what’s the big secret around getting something done. It’s not starting. It’s never the starting. It’s the planning. Planning is everything. I should know because I used to manage the financial/strategic planning process for a half-billion dollar global tech company. Without a plan, you have nothing.

In a nutshell, you need to start small. Small, like the size of a nutshell. Get it? Here’s the recipe: You write down what you want to do. And, then you write down the next 3 micro-steps you need to take to further the accomplishment of your objective.

This gives you a goal and some steps to accomplish the goal. I didn’t say to write down all the steps — just the first three. That’s enough to get you started and to build momentum. As you accelerate through the project, your momentum will naturally carry you to the next logical step.

Think about this: When’s the last time you actually approached something you wanted or needed to do in this fashion? Likely never. Most people will just think and think and think some more about something. They won’t spend a minute planning anything out — unless it’s a vacation. 🙂

There’s more to the story than that, but if you only had that, you’d be good to go. That’s what helps me get so much done. That and the amazing systems I use to get more done faster and easier. 😉 I teach it to my clients — and it works. The other part is accountability. It’s having a coach or a guide from the side to keep you on track A coach can help you through the rough patches and celebrate the wins that you’ll certainly have.

Just for today, think about this and let me know how it feels. I challenge you to take one thing you want to accomplish and break it down into these parts — what I want to do and 3 micro-steps.

As a business coach, I work with entrepreneurs around the world to increase their visibility, credibility, and profitability. I do that by coaching them around operational efficiencies, marketing, and team issues. If you’re looking for a new and refreshing perspective on challenging issues and you’re ready to work with a coach, let’s connect this week.
